Blog Drafts That Never Saw the Light of Day

Hello, beauties! Life was too hectic for me that I wasnt able to follow up on my previous promise to get back to this blog. But worry no more! I just had an idea! I looked into my drafts and saw I gathered a lot of ideas through the years but didnt manage to either finish or publish them. So I'm going to share some of them here today!

Hilarity in Ancient Chinese Portraits

What do you get when you mix classical portraits of Chinese men and cleverness.
Saw these at weibo a month ago.

A Necessary Haitus

My laptop's motherboard fucked up once again you see, so I have to have it repaired by some courageous, intelligent humans. However I was told that patching up my Acer not only would take them a long time to but it would be quite expensive (in my point of view) too.

Basically that means I'll be absent for a few weeks. I will be back as soon as those intelligent humans succeed in saving my darling and me having enough funds to ransom it when that day comes.

For now, I'll be busy with getting myself out of unemployment and other activities where the word 'internet' is not mentioned. So goodbye for now dear readers and have fun reading my past blog posts, I'll be back someday.

Jesse Eisenberg is Lex and People are Still Bitching About It

Last January, this year, Warner Bros had announced that 30-year-old Jesse Eisenberg had been chosen to act out the role of Lex Luthor in the highly anticipated ‘Batman vs. Superman’ movie. Not surprisingly, this fueled a huge negative reception. After the commotion with Ben Affleck being chosen as Batman last year, this sure is another bad publicity for the film.

This reminded me of another DC film adaptation way back in 2008 where a certain actor was "mistakenly" chosen to act a certain iconic role:

But compared to the reactions to Eisenberg and Ben Affleck's casting, Ledger's was still kinda tame. Because despite the negative reactions to the new Joker, at least Ledger had the advantage of being respected for his past films and the social media during that time is still not as popular as it is now. To be fair, Affleck has some catching up to do after the Daredevil flop and how could the young Eisenberg play a smug, charismatic, egotistical millionaire?

Oh wait

What I'm saying is, people should calm their tits when it comes to screaming murder against casting decisions made by producers and directors who are too busy to hear your "ideas" anyway. Especially those who are in the extremes, the ones who seriously act as if they know exactly how everything would turn out (yes whether it's negative or positive) when the film isnt even made yet. Predictions are nice but being a loud exaggerated shit is annoying.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with having calm open-minded discussions, right?. It just annoys me that there are those who loudly comment as if their opinions came straight out of the bible. Wait until the movie comes out then start releasing your inner demons.

Cosplay is For Everybody!

Most cosplayers frown upon half-hearted costumes found in cons and competitions. It is understandable since it's frustrating to see "easy" made cosplays while others were busy building their characters using expensive materials and complicated designs. However there comes a time when you just have to push all seriousness away and have silly fun once in a while, and one of the best channels to be carefree from all other rules is the internet.

Months ago, pictures of hilariously resourceful cosplays have been going around blogs and forums. From imitating Goku's golden hair via bananas, to an amazing recreation of the Frozen's Elsa, the "cosplayer" managed to succesfully made everyone smile at simple brilliance of it all, since he was using basically anything an average guy could find around the house. The man behind the powdered faces was no other than the Thai moderator of the Facebook page Lowcost Cosplay Anucha "Cha" Saengchart. His page had grown to more than 150,000 likes. Not only does it showcase his creations, but you could now also see other resourceful contributions from fans.

See more of his fantastic transformations after the jump!

Fan-Made Akira Live Action Trailer is Superb!

Requests for live version of the 1988 anime cult classic Akira had been heard for many years already. There had been talks of creating such film in Holywood but even the current plans is yet to see the light of day. However in 2012, fans created the Akira Project via an IndieGoGo campaign, a global crowdfunding site. The main goal was to create a 5-minute live acton trailer that would also "stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice."

After a year and a half of waiting, Akira Project is finally done with their own fan-made live action Akira trailer. It is awesomesauce:

Lead by director/producer Nguyen-Anh Nguyen and CineGround Media, the team is composed of 100 people from 12 countries. They had Xavier Yuvens as Tetsuo and Osric Chau (a.k.a. Kevin the prophet) as Kaneda. The product is a tasteful, impressive fan trailer that could put Hollywood to shame.

Well I might be exaggerating, but don't forget that this is an unofficial project by devoted fans. Any attempt by Hollywood studios in the future better make sure that they'll follow this group's vision in recreating anime classics into live action films. Nothing's as worse as seeng a Japanese character being played by a Caucasian (remember that Zac Efron as Kaneda rumor? cringe)

Congratulations to all the team members, the actors who gave their tim and to everyone's creativity and efforts. Job well done!

Funny Pinoys

Armed with an internet connection, a camera and a "shabu pa" philosophy, an average Filipino will go a long long way. You see, apart from the usual memes, political opinions and trending topics brought by the Filipino online community, random photos showcasing a Pinoy's optimistic and stupidly hilarious side are another source of laughter that never fails:

Finally Found One of my Fave Stories Ever

The Egg
by Andy Weir

As an introduction, let me just share that I first read this from Galactanet. But I truly fell in love with this simple, mind-blowing short story that I want to have it in this blog too, in case I lost it again. For those who have not yet read this composition, go on with scrolling this page then, I assure you that it's worth your few minutes. If you think Quantum physics, religious debates and political theories are enough to blow your minds, you were wrong (but don't worry it's not going to be too much of a 2deep4u):
You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.
“Are you god?” You asked.
“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”
“My kids… my wife,” you said.
“What about them?”
“Will they be all right?”
“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”
You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn't look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.
“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn't have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”
“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”
“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”
“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”
“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”
You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”
“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”
“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”
“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”
I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you've gained all the experiences it had.
“You've been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”
“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”
“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”
“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”
“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”
“Where you come from?” You said.
“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn't understand.”
“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”
“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”
“So what’s the point of it all?”
“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”
“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.
I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”
“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”
“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”
“Just me? What about everyone else?”
“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”
You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”
“All you. Different incarnations of you.”
“Wait. I’m everyone!?”
“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.
“I’m every human being who ever lived?”
“Or who will ever live, yes.”
“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”
“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.
“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.
“And you’re the millions he killed.”
“I’m Jesus?”
“And you’re everyone who followed him.”
You fell silent.
“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you've done, you've done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”
You thought for a long time.
Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”
“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”
“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”
“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you've lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”
“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”
“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”
And I sent you on your way.
Fin. But see why I love this?
Quite a fascinating and fantastic concept on the idea of life. It's not usual to get a good story like this where we are forced to really think it over. It's not supposed to be literal of course but the one soul-for-everyone thing just gets to me. Putting relationships with different people under a whole new spotlight all of the sudden. Just fucking brilliant.

Surprisingly Mean Celebrities?

I was browsing thorugh a few reddit pages when I happen to came upon this Askreddit post:

Now, this subreddit is just full of good questions but this particular one is attention-grabbing so I decided to read through it. As expected, most of the replies are the usual "I asked for an autograph and he/she declined so he/she's a bitchy shit" shit. It's hard work to actually read legit sounding experiences with mean celebrities, without all the drama of being scorned by someone famous.

To sum them all up, Demi Lovato, Julia Roberts, and Anne Hathaway are apparently mean girls in real life. Lindsay Lohan is said to be bitchy too but her weirdness is more noteworthy, so it's not really clear which is the real thing. The most surprising I read about was Micheal Jordan is the default Horrible Dick in Real Life. Oh and that Rachel Ray "is a terrible human being".

In the neutral side, Emma Watson is extremely introverted/shy and Mariah Carrey is (not surprised here) is a total diva.

On the brighter side, Adam Sandler, Kim Kardashian, Selena Gomez, John Mayer, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, Taylor Swift, Mila Kunis, James Franco,Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alec Baldwin, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Jeff Bridges, Dywane Johnson, Robin Williams are are ultra nice guys.

Last but not the least, Keanu Reeves is a saint.

Well, these are not my experiences or opinions, it could be a full decade before I could even meet a Hollywood celebrity in person.

So to read how various experiences formed into conclusions, read the rest of the thread here.

Link Feature: 3 Websites to "Waste" Time

Time is gold as the saying goes, but most of us tend to forget its importance and take me for example. I usually spend hours on Tumblr or 9gag, but that results to me forgetting about online projects, or just leave me feeling guilty of having wasted my time on pictures of cute cats,
Now, I promised to myself that if I ever had a lazy mood and only had internet for company, I could at least put that time to good use. So let me share to you my three favorite websites to help us waste time effectively:

Cracked

Easily one of most popular humor sites online. Everybody knows about them and the only introduction I could give it that they share knowledge in a funny way.
Cracked had been quite lucky with their viewers all these years and had given itself a makeover, making the entire page easier to navigate compared to its older self. Another good improvement is that the writers are now updating almost everyday so visitors could always expect to find another note-worthy article to look forward to.
Some favorite articles:
-The 15 Most Shameless Fake Photos Ever Passed Off as Real
-5 Things Movie Trailers Need to Stop Doing

AsianJunkie

Focusing mainly on Kpop, Kdramas, plus a dash of Jpop and fangirls on the side, AsianJunkie has always been my favorite Asian Entertainment website. I've been reading their articles for years, and despite the internet humor and troll-poking celebrities, they still managed to discuss the issues effectively. It could be from controversies, hilarious fan comments, new singles, and even G Dragon's fashion sense and this constant crusades against creepy fangirls and fanboys. Lastly, they're pretty useful to keep up with the asian entertainment news.
Some favorite articles:
-Perfume reveal new album art for ‘LEVEL 3′, a new song ’1mm’, and Kashiyuka’s forehead
-New K-Pop Groups Likely Victims Of Impending Market Correction Due To Oversaturation
-Top 5 Best C-Pop Artists For Virgin Ears

ListVerse

Learning is constant, but doing research on your own is shitty. But since Listverse exist, I am at peace. Covering science, society, history and more, their articles share Top 10 of every topic, summarized and understandable. You could already learns tons of stuff just reading through them in an hour. They are a bit similar to Cracked, a serious version is more direct to the point.
Some interesting articles:

What To Wear for the Lower Half

The following scans from a Japanese magazine. But since I have no idea where these exactly came from (I mean just look at all those magazines, it's impossible to search through them all), I decided to save the scans and share them here. First things first, each row shows different types of legs, and the columns signify the shoes, skirts, leggings and jeans used by the models. With the chart you could identify which combinations look good on certain types of legs. From what I could decipher:
Bad         OK        ◯ Good
Please be reminded too that the magazine's fashion sense does not necessarily mean it would be the same for others. So just chill away and be calm if you happen to disagree with one of the combinations below.

Shoes + Shorts / Skirts
Tights + Skirts
Skirts
Pants
Quite comprehensive, I hope I'll be able to unearth an upper body version soon.

Introducing, Nunu's House!

Ever since 2001, Tomo Tanaka of Nunu's House produces one of the most amazing miniatures I've ever seen online. Each and every one of his creations boasts such fascinating clarity of details, the cuteness factor as well as the perfect texture for every . Seeing them at first glance, one would have mistaken them for normal sized things, but most of them were even smaller than a coin.
His most popular pieces were the miniature food. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Look at that sauce, and those bananas!

Link Feature: Three Pinoy Online Shops to Bookmark

Besides the ongoing blog challenge I'm doing right now, I will also start featuring websites, blogs and all other cool things I found online. For this first post for the series, I am putting three Philippine-based online shops under the spotlight:

Heima

Heima® Home & Lifestyle is an online shop that takes pride from their original product lines. They design furnitures like chairs, tables, etc.The cool thing is they accept custom-made orders, giving home furnitures a cute and unique twist with good attention to detail. I love going through their catalog, everything looks contemporary but colorful. They also offer home decors, cameras, phones, paper products, and from the screen cap above, typewriters. They sure are versatile, and that's a good thing.
Browse more from their shop here

Hey Kessy

Hey Kessy is just one of the increasing number of washi tape resellers online. The reason why I chose to feature this shop instead is because one, they are affordable and readily available in Philippines. This would mean lesser shipping expense as well as lesser risk. They also sell other paper products like stickers, party bags, paper straws, but also offers tote bags. But they are best known for their washi tapes nonetheless. I love their wide selection of designs, from polka dots to floral designs. It's really neat since craft materials are almost always hard to find in Philippines.
See them here, and hessy kessy is also active in Facebook

Belle de Jour

Belle de Jour is French fashion lingo for an “It” girl. From a personal DIY project, BDJ power planners have certainly come a long way. The company "envision products that empower Filipinos to —try, dare, fail, succeed, experience—live." Classy. They are now specializing in creating sophisticated and girl-power themed planners, and journals, plus membership into their very own community.
The journals also consists of articles, and coupons, making it more than a regular woman's journal. I don't personally use planners, I am not the organized type of girl, but their products are worth the look though. Find out more about them here

People Bowing to Arashi...WUT?

This week, photos of supposedly Arashi fans bowing to the posters of the boys are circulating around the Japanese social media. It is quite weird and very alarming. Here is Kotaku's aritcle about the situation:

Have you ever heard of Arashi? It's a Japanese boy band that's so popular, that a poster of the group is drawing crowds, cameras, and grovelling. You might not know Arashi, but perhaps you've seen Letters from Iwo Jima? One of the stars, Kazunari Ninomiya, is a member of Arashi. The group has also appeared in Nintendo commercials, most notably for the 3DS launch, so there's that

8 Filipino Words That do not Translate to English

Found this cool blogpost from 8list.ph:

Found this cool blogpost from 8list.ph:

Filipino is a funny language. To foreign ears, our words can sound a mite too percussive, as the ratatat of the expression “Kakabakaba ka ba?” can show.Other times, our vocabulary can just be outright weird, to the point that expats can only scratch their scalps in bemusement.

READ HERE to know about the 8 Filipino words without English Equivalent!

Copying off our Boys? Really?

Hi, I'm here for another Arashi post! I'll talk about people outside the group this time, these are the ones crawling over twitter and blogs because they are said to have done a bit of snooping and copying off the popular Japanese group. Weirdly the following allegations had nothing to do with their music or dance steps:

Unrequited Love in a Few Blog Posts

I was doing online journal hopping again. I stumbled upon two old Filipino blogs and I was both amused and saddened. An interesting one was AMIDST SPELL, a blog that only had 5 posts, but I guess the blog was made as an outlet for a girl’s feelings. I'm not so sure if the following entries are authentic or just fiction, but I'm sad for her all the same.
A post written in August 2002 says:
“...may gusto akong sabihin sa kanya pero di ko masabi, natatakot ako baka di nya ako maintindihan. minsan, nararamdaman kong ganun din sya sa akin, pero bakit di nya sinasabi. naguguluhan na ako. tama nga bang ibigin sya ng tutuo? hay....naku! kailan nya kaya malalaman? sana, di maging huli ang lahat...”
("..there something I want to tell him but I can't, I'm afraid he won't understand. Sometimes, I feel he might feel the same way about me, but he's not saying anything. I'm confused. Is it even right to love him? hay.... naku! I wonder will he ever know? I hope it won't be too late...")
By December 2002 however:
("I'm sad at this moment. I've talked to Eppy through the phone last Sunday. I thought I would be happy once more with hearing his voice. He said he was cheered when he got my letter, the same thing goes for his grandmother, I was overjoyed. However I hadn't realized that it would be my last. That smile froze when he said he finally had a girlfriend. And during that moment my dear blogger, I don't know why but all words are lost and I couldn't say anything back. The only thing I could feel was the warmth of my falling tears. He went on talking, but I couldn't hear him already. He asked questions but I couldn't reply. He isn't aware that there are still a lot of things about me he doesn't know about. And that hurts the most. To keep your love for someone a secret, and by the time you're ready to show your feelings... it's already too late ; (
Dear blogger, I love Eppy and I can't afford to lose him...even if he knows nothing, even he didn't became mine")
How I'm imagining her after that phone call
Soooooo, I think she'd rather preserve their friendship instead of confessing her feelings and risks losing whatever relationship they have. Such martyrdom.

Helping in AncientLives

We could all dream to be like Indiana Jones once in a while, but to actually help in any archeological studies is not something anyone could have an opportunity of. However the online project of AncientLives is a great place to volunteer and somehow contribute to history is your own little way.

The papyri on displayed at this website were the product of the project's collaboration with various institutions like Oxford Papyrologists and Researchers, The Imaging Papyri Project, The Oxyrhynchus Papyri Project, the Egypt Exploration Society, etc. Plus these were discovered in Egypt were written many years ago. However, the collection proved to be so vast, it gave today's scholars such a drastically time-consuming job. The process of reading the papyri have been easier these past few decades due to the advancement of technology.. In Ancient Lives, and using the power of the internet, anyone could assist in this large-scale project.

In the website, you could help by either transcribing ancient alphabet or measure the papyri. There are good tutorials you could use first before doing either work. The data gathered and combined from both human and computer intelligence would be most beneficial for identifying, translating and studying ancient texts and documents.

Project director Dr Dirk Obbink said:

"We aim to transcribe as much as possible of the original papyri, and then identify and reconstruct the text. No single pair of eyes can see and read everything. From scientists and professors to school students and ancient enthusiasts, everyone has something to contribute - and gain."
The project's overall goal is
"...To rapidly transform image data from papyri into meaningful information that scholars can use to study Greek literature and Greco-Roman Egypt; information that once took generations to produce."
So, if you've got any interest in history or ancient Egypt, this is about one of the best opportunities to be productive online.
